Fall is here! It’s the season of dramatic color and chilly nights. In the colder and darker areas of the country, the decrease in sunlight signals our bodies that it’s time to hibernate. (California might not experience it to the same extent but trust me, we feel it here, too.) It can be difficult to find motivation, but slowing down is not necessarily an obstacle, just merely a bump in the road on our long and exciting journey to a healthier body and lifestyle.
A big part of living a healthy life is listening to what the body needs, and accepting the changes it goes through. Let’s invite some new movement to play with, to get the body going and the mind motivated again. Here are a few things I have seen lately, which bring the fun into staying fit…

Love is one of the most powerful forces. I find that women who are critical of their bodies are missing a degree of self-love. Phytochemicals may help with everything from fighting cancer to improving memory, and scientists say the best way to get them is to eat a rich assortment of plant-based foods. Spinach, tomatoes, and grapes are just some of the well-known foods that contain phytochemicals, but there are literally hundreds of others, including whole grains, vegetables, beans, fruits, and nuts.
Check out this chart of phytochemical-rich foods and their effects. You might even take it with you when you shop for groceries. In addition to adding more health-boosting phytochemicals to your diet, perhaps you’ll discover some delicious new flavors!

I once had a client who struggled with a weight issue but felt about exercising the way I feel about doing laundry – a dreadful and tedious chore that has to be done but demands oh so much time, effort, and engagement. His doctor warned him that he had to lose weight or else, and of course this pressure didn’t make the task any more tantalizing.
He was a brilliant computer expert and brainiac of sorts, but he had been struggling with the physical for a long time. There was clearly a disconnect between his physical body and his deep thinking, profound mind. Digging into his athletic past, we discovered several instances where he had felt discouraged about his physical abilities. This turned into an almost fear of moving the body.
