Is There a “Fat-Burning Zone”?

loud_questionThe concepts of target heart rate and “fat burning zone” are subjects my clients often ask about, and I recently came across an interesting article that explains some of the science and strategies behind fat loss.

As Jason Karp explains in How to Burn Fat Faster & More Efficiently, our bodies use both fat and carbohydrates for energy during exercise. Low-intensity exercises like walking use more fat for energy, while higher-intensity activities draw more heavily upon carbs for energy. However, the assumption that low-intensity exercise constitutes a better “fat-burning zone” is incorrect. (more…)

When Week 8 of the transformation comes around, many of my clients already feel a sense of achievement. At this point, my hope is to have guided you to mindfulness, whether it is just moving your body, breathing, replenishing water and nutrition, or giving yourself permission to give all of this to your own body! What an act of love and respect to actually set aside time and effort into healing, nurturing, and creating the best you. I applaud you and whistle loudly!

This is the week of energy bursts. I would like to invite you to start implementing some exercises that will actually increase your metabolism and instantly give you more energy!

My 30-Minute Stress Relief Workout

Is the economy or other stress distracting you from your health? I have found that in times of stress, physical exertion is one of the most important and effective actions we can take. Exercise releases feel-good hormones such as endorphins and adrenaline, and reduces stress hormone levels.

Yet our natural reaction to stress seems to be to remove things from our day that feel superfluous and time-consuming. Often that includes the time we spend on our health. We sacrifice that time, and ourselves, to other more “important” causes at hand, despite the fact that the stressor might be something we don’t have any control over, anyway.
