Abs Diet Powerfoods: Extra-Protein (Whey) Powder

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Over the past couple of months, we’ve been going down the list of Abs Diet Powerfoods that help you build muscle, burn fat, and stay in tip-top condition. This week we’ve come to Extra-Protein Powder or, in other words, whey. Powdered whey contains essential amino acids for muscle growth and recovery … but it’s not just for bodybuilders! What’s really great is that it offers a high amount of protein for few calories; one serving contains only about 100 calories and 2 grams of fat.

Whey protein powder is also really easy to keep in your kitchen or carry around with you to work, school, or the gym for a quick, filling snack. As you know, I recommend eating 4-5 small meals or snacks a day, every 3 hours. This will boost your metabolism in the most efficient way and keep blood sugar levels even throughout the day. One of the easiest snacks you can have is a protein shake. Just mix 1 scoop of protein powder with about 4 ounces of water and you’re good to go. For a smoothie, give this a whirl in the blender with berries or even spinach. You can also drink this before a workout.

Interview at 29 Secrets!

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Alyssa Buckley recently interviewed me for the blog 29 Secrets. We talked about my new Reebok Bootcamp DVD, circuit training, motivation, and more:

“Motivation is key,” says Tanja. “Everyone loses the motivation sometimes and I always say that is when you have to switch to auto pilot so that you get the work done. Getting in shape and seeing results are of course an amazing motivator, but there won’t be results if there is no work done.” Ask yourself, “Why are you doing this? Who is your role model and what kind of inspiring traits does that person have? What will you tell yourself when you want to quit? If you are prepped with these answers they might help you get through the rough spots.”

Check out the rest of the article where you can register to win a free copy of the DVD!

Finding Your Exercise Match

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

One of the things I always tell people is you need to find a form of exercise that works for YOU. If it doesn’t make you happy, chances are you won’t stick with it. For some people, a treadmill at the gym is just the thing. Others prefer jogging outdoors. Still others need a different form of movement, like my client who discovered joy (and weight loss) in a dancing mat.

Whole Living recently published a great post on How to Find the Kind of Exercise that Suits You Best. Author Ellen Barrett compares finding your ideal workout to dating. Here’s her advice for pinpointing your perfect workout:

1. Go on “dates” to this yoga studio and that trapeze class. You don’t have to go back.

2. Do a post-mortem. After every date, sit down and write two lists: what you liked and disliked about that date. You may have liked the time slot (9am on a Saturday) and disliked the outfit (mouth guard, no thank you!).

In no time, you’ll pinpoint your perfect fit, and the two of you will live happily ever after

In addition to these tips, I’d add that you don’t have to stick to classes, either. Borrow DVD workouts from friends or the library, try exercising at the park if you usually work out inside, check out a local hiking club, or rent a bike or rollerblades for the day. What kind of movement did you enjoy as a child? (Hula hoop, perhaps?) Who says you can’t have that much fun now?!

Do you have a question? Don’t be shy – ask it here!
