Boost Your Life Force!

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Even if you are an avid fitness enthusiast who keeps a consistent training regimen, the likelihood of hitting a plateau with your progress and energy levels is a given. Your body’s energy systems work hard to adapt to your energy output. But the demands you put on your body, doing the same thing over and over again, will slowly make it seem as if your body is changing less and less frequently. It might show up as actual weight gain or lack of energy.

This stagnancy not only happens to your physical body, but to your mind and spirit, as well. Do you ever have the feeling that you’re standing still or stuck when it comes to certain situations in your life? That uncomfortable feeling starts growing inside, and perhaps you want to jump-start some kind of change.

The bottom line is: you need to change it up, shock your body, give it something new to chew on!

One of my favorite ways to break through a plateau is to do a plyo workout. Make sure you feel strong enough first, and thus safe, and then try adding a few jumps to your training schedule. It can be as easy as including 3×20 squat jumps, 3 times per week, in the middle of your regular workout. Not only are they energizing, but it’s also a great way to incorporate all that core work you have been working on. You will be amazed at how much energy you will gain after just one week, not to mention the boost in your metabolism!

Now transfer that process to real life. What needs a boost in your daily life for change to happen? Is there an area where you feel you want to improve? Which tools can you use? Do you long for more focus? Maybe a short daily meditation practice could be implemented. Do you feel a lack of motivation at present? Perhaps an inspiring book about someone’s true life story about overcoming hurdles is the tool to use. A few of my personal favorites: reading poetry for instant inspiration, listening mindfully to the lyrics of my favorite musical artist, or reading a new book. It isn’t difficult or complicated to create change in the status quo. It only takes action.

Here’s a quick energy-booster workout:

1. After a short warm-up, do 5 sun salutations in a row. Be mindful of breath and movement. Reach arms overhead, do a swan dive forward, stay in a forward bend for a few breaths, and the return to a standing position.

2. Squat deep and jump up in the air, landing back into another squat. Repeat for 20 if you can.

3. Do 3×30 second planks, in a push-up position.

4. Repeat the squat-jump sequence.

5. Do 10 slow roll-ups lying on the floor.

6. Repeat the squat-jump sequence a third time.

Repeat this short energy workout three times a week for two weeks, and experience an uplifting change in your energy, metabolism … and in your smile!

Becoming Aware Of Your Energy

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Humans are made out of energy and sustained by energy. Our bodies are ever-changing, dynamic fields of energy, not static physical structures. We know from quantum physics theories that at the subatomic level, matter and energy are interchangeable. Some people call this the spirit.

We can view our bodies as manifestations of our spiritual energy. Daily thoughts are a part of this energy. Psychological and emotional factors influence our health greatly because our emotions and thoughts are always accompanied by biochemical reactions in our body. It is the life force of our organically ever-changing energy system that keeps our heart beating and lungs breathing. That life force energy is not only inside of us, but affects other people, and the world around us. Clearly energy, thoughts, actions, interactions, and intention have a profound effect on health. Our first step is to become aware of ourselves and our energies.

My suggestion for creating balanced energy, finding intrinsic motivation, and finding your life force, involves learning the skill of listening to yourself. Some of us have done it for many years, but most of us tune out at some level. And it is easy to tune out, since there are so many other voices from the outside telling us what to do, what is hip and cool, how to look, and how to act to be successful.

Exercise to become aware of your energy:

Take some time to try to become fully aware of your presence for a whole day. Listen, feel, touch, smell, taste, and study how you interact with your loved ones and strangers. How do you feel in the beginning of the day, middle, end?

Your Inner Strength

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

loud_innerstrength_20090720The core is an essential part of your physical strength and stability. You can also consider it to be the essence of the inner you, the place where you build inner strength and create the energy you use. This Powerhouse or Cradle is the initiator of any physical event your muscles experience or express. The muscles involved here are the ones that support the back and access the deeper abdominals, not just the six pack. A basketball player who has good core control can jump higher, shoot farther, and run faster. The same theory holds true for any sport.

In normal life, a strong core keeps our backs healthy and supported, as well as our shoulders and hip girdles working in symphony. If you have good core control, it can save you from injuries you might be susceptible to, such as being involved in a fall. In essence, good core control means good posture, strength, flexibility, and most of all, stability. In a similar way, you can use having a strong core as an analogy for building inner strength and energy for life.

You train your body and soul to pay attention to and appreciate YOU by building inner strength and energy. As you engage in the process of paying attention to the beauty of YOU, any lost motivation starts to build back up quickly. It’s the same thing we felt when we were kids playing and doing things we really liked. Feelings, actions and desires, which come from the innate individual you are, help to move you forward and make you excited!

Of course, it is not a one day or one week process. The beauty of this kind of journey is that the actual progress of feeling better, stronger, and more balanced motivates you to go further. When you train your Powerhouse to be stronger, you train your inner YOU to be stronger, as well.

Go to my 8 Minute Ball Workout and do the exercises a few times until you know them. Then try to do some of the moves while visualizing how the energy is created within. In the center of your core is a bright white light that warms your whole body and creates that uplifting feeling of joy. Move the “light energy” around in your body, send it through the room, and share it with people you love.

Good luck, let me know how it’s going, and Live Life Loud!

Try This Routine For Explosive Energy!

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Need an energy burst to get you going in the morning or at the end of a long day? Try this routine for explosive muscle strength and increased metabolism. It’s also fun to do with a family member or friend. Kids really get into it, too!

Time yourself after you complete the first set, note the time, and check whether you can beat your own record next time.

  • 20 regular squats
  • 20 frog jumps (jumping squats)
  • 20 push-ups
  • 20 reverse lunges
  • 20 Russian get ups (lie on your back on the floor, get up without using your hands, reach your arms over your head)
  • 20 tricep dips (in the gym or on a chair)
  • 20 lateral slide jumps (like skating)
  • 20 crunches
  • 20 criss cross twists (oblique crunches with the bicycle)

Repeat the cycle 3 times, and rest whenever you need to. The resting time will decrease, and your ability to move in a flow will improve. That is when you know you are improving in cardiovascular ability and explosive strength, not to mention working out like a rock star!
